Creating a Coastal Theme in Any Room

Want to feel like you’re at the beach every day? If you want your home to look like a coastal home, you can take some cues from other decorators who have achieved the style well.

Take inspiration from what you like and from your memories and create a room you love around those concepts. If your memories are filled with beach days and ocean water, try these tricks for bringing that home:

  • Soft Sea Colors. There are a few colors that always seem to go well in a coastal theme. These include blue, white, coral, yellow, and green. Try a combination of different shades to find the one that works for your space and your concept.
  • Use Sand to Decorate (Carefully!). You don’t want to bring a mountain of sand into your home, but a little bit of decorative sand in the bottom of a vase or two is a great touch, especially when paired with a candle or some arranged branches and flowers.
  • Art. While you’ll want to steer clear of anything that looks like it belongs in a doctor’s office, a great beach painting or water-themed art will tie the look together well.
  • Beach-themed Accessories. While it’s important to not go over the top to keep your house from looking over-stylized, a few carefully chosen accessories in the room can accent the theme. Try coral pieces and fresh, white flowers with branches for a rustic, outdoor beach feel.
